You have definitely been working hard this year, with all of those Advanced Placement classes you are taking. And they are fun, too, even though they are a lot of work. You are reading more, writing more, interrogating history (instead of just skimming through it). And you are doing really well on your assignments. But there, looming on the horizon, are those big exams. You know, the exams that will determine whether you get college credit for this extra work. What you need is some online AP test prep.
How do the AP exams work?
While your teachers and guidance counselors have likely already talked through all of this with you, it NEVER hurts to step back and review how the AP system works. Thinking through the whole process will help you to determine if you would benefit from an AP prep course, with guidance, tutoring, and even some practice tests (spoiler alert: you would definitely benefit).
It all begins in the classroom. You have enrolled in AP classes, taught on an approved curriculum that has been standardized. College Board, the organization that oversees the AP program, describes AP as “college-level courses and exams that you can take in high school.” They explain that there are real benefits that come as a result of finishing the courses and performing well on the exams. These benefits include:
- Earning college credit (while you are still in high school)
- Earning the ability to skip introductory courses in college
- Saving money and time when you get to college
- Standing out on your college applications (College Board notes that “85% of selective colleges and universities report that a student’s AP experience favorably impacts admission decisions”)
So these are more than just classes that are a bit harder than those your peers are taking. These are preparations for your future.
At the end of each class, you will be asked to take an exam that has been standardized so that every AP student in the nation takes the same exam for their AP course, even though they took the class at their own high school. The benefits listed above all depend on a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the exams. They are pretty high-stakes, and with good reason. College Board explains that “Qualifying AP Exam scores earn university credit in nearly all universities in the United States and Canada and are recognized in 60 other countries worldwide. Scores of 3 or 4 on AP Exams fulfill admission requirements in many universities in the UK and Europe.”
What is an AP Prep Course?
With a standardized test, sometimes students can run into gaps in what they have been thoroughly taught, or areas where their various instructors have particular strengths or weaknesses. It’s not uncommon for a student to struggle to master the nuanced concepts that the exam will test them on, especially in a classroom full of other students. For many students, an online AP test prep course will make all the difference they need to make sure that those college credits are secured.
While there are many online options available, a top-notch AP exam prep course will offer a variety of options and solutions that can be customized to each student.
Perfect practice makes perfect
You have probably heard the old adage that “practice makes perfect,” but that’s only partially correct. If you are practicing something incorrectly, or practicing the wrong part of something, then there is little hope of achieving mastery. Real mastery requires perfect practice, and that’s where an online AP prep course can come in. Find an AP Subject Test Prep that utilizes WEEKLY AP practice tests which allow the tutors to systematically review student’s strengths and weaknesses over time, and to adjust the review material accordingly. That means that the tutors could catch a rare bad day, and accurately track your improvement. An online practice exam, without another human being involved, might be able to tell you if a question is right or wrong, but it can’t help you figure out WHY!
